Something typically Menorcan is their famous avarcas, simple, comfortable and practical. They were brought to the island by the Catalan-Aragonese crown, who, with their conquest in the 13th century, inspired the Menorcan peasants to create flexible and resistant footwear that would allow them to work the land with their feet protected from the cold, stones and stubble. The Menorcan peasants used to put straw inside their primitive avarcas to protect themselves from the damp and keep their feet warm and free from chilblains that would prevent them from continuing to work.
